Cape Cod Healthcare selects Courion to automate identity and access risk management
Hospital system automates user access management, streamlines compliance audits, and secures sensitive patient data for 6,000-plus users
WESTBOROUGH, Mass. — Courion Corporation, the leader in identity and access management (IAM) for access risk, today announced that Cape Cod Healthcare has chosen Courion access risk management solutions to automate and streamline identity and access management (IAM) processes as part of a strategic technology migration and long-term plans to manage access to sensitive data and applications.
Cape Cod Healthcare, one of America's top 10 health care systems, is the leading provider of health care services for residents and visitors of Cape Cod. With more than 450 physicians, 4,500 employees and 1,100 volunteers, Cape Cod Healthcare has two acute care hospitals; the Cape's leading provider of homecare and hospice services (VNA); a skilled nursing and rehabilitation facility; an assisted living facility and numerous health programs.
Cape Cod Healthcare chose the Courion Suite as a cornerstone of its conversion to Siemens healthcare information software, which requires each system user to have a unique user ID. Cape Cod Healthcare will use the Courion Suite to provision new identities for staff, contractors and patients, certify user access, and for self-service password management.
Cape Cod Healthcare's Rich Bianco will discuss the organization's experiences implementing the Courion Suite on a panel discussion entitled "The Benefits of a Prescriptive Approach to Your Implementation" at Courion's annual customer conference, CONVERGE 2012, at the Renaissance Boston Waterfront Hotel.
"Courion demonstrated a good grasp of the challenges we are up against. As we evaluated their products, it was clear they were designed to deliver rapid results, exactly what we needed to move our technology migration ahead," said Bianco, director of user services at Cape Cod Healthcare. "They have a proven track record with healthcare customers that gave us a great deal of confidence. They presented an implementation methodology that will get us up and running quickly."
The Courion Suite's rapid implementation will enable Cape Cod Healthcare to remain on schedule for launching the Siemens system; the project is scheduled to go live in October 2012, meaning the transition to new identities must be available before then.
Automating IAM will also help Cape Cod Healthcare demonstrate compliance with government regulations such as HIPAA and HITECH, as well as fulfill audit requirements. The Courion Suite gives business managers detailed views of which users have access to what resources, enabling them to verify compliance with access policies or identify inappropriate user activity. The system uses corporate policy guidelines to determine how frequently managers and resource owners need to review and certify user access to sensitive resources. It enables them to review the user's access rights, compare them to those designated as appropriate according to policy, and ultimately confirm that the user's access is appropriate.
"Managing access to sensitive patient data is a driving force for healthcare organizations, so Cape Cod Healthcare's need to get up and running with IAM quickly is a familiar challenge to Courion," said Chad Wolcott, director of professional services at Courion. "By leveraging our best practices implementation methodology, we're able to rapidly address their requirements for security, compliance and access risk management while supporting the overall objectives for their critical technology migration project."
